The fibre

Is naturally colored cotton really undyed?

The pigment grows inside the fibre, so no dye is applied. But “undyed” is not the same as “unprocessed” — here is everything that still happens to the cotton.

It is the first question every buyer asks, usually with a raised eyebrow: if the cotton is brown, surely somebody dyed it brown? The answer is no — and the more interesting answer is what does happen between the field and the finished brief.

Where the colour comes from

In naturally colored cotton, pigment — mainly condensed tannins — develops inside the lumen of the fibre while the boll is still growing. By the time the boll opens, the lint is already brown, tan, rust or green. You can see it on the plant: the field looks like a field of earth-toned cotton, not white cotton with a stain.

Ginning, carding, spinning and knitting do not add colour. They also do not remove it, which is why the yarn on the cone is the same shade as the fibre in the boll.

What “undyed” still involves

Here is where marketing language starts to bend. Undyed cotton is still scoured — washed with mild alkali to remove waxes, pectin and field dust so the fibre can absorb moisture and knit cleanly. It may be soft-finished with a mechanical or enzyme treatment. It is bleached only if it is meant to be white, which is exactly what we avoid.

So the honest claim is: no dyestuff, no optical brightener, no dye-fixing chemistry. Not “no processing whatsoever”. Any supplier who tells you the fibre is untouched is either confused or selling you something.

Why this matters for skin

Residual dye, heavy-metal mordants and formaldehyde-based fixing agents are the usual suspects in textile contact dermatitis. Removing the dye step removes a whole category of potential irritants at once — which is why undyed colored cotton is specified so often for eczema-prone skin, post-surgical wear and newborn clothing.

It is not a medical product and we do not claim it treats anything. It is simply one less variable next to the skin.

How to verify it

  • Ask for the fibre lot and the spinning mill. Colored cotton yarn is traded as a distinct article; a mill invoice will name the shade.
  • Look at the yarn, not just the fabric. Undyed colored cotton yarn is the same shade throughout its cross-section; dyed yarn often shows a slightly lighter core when untwisted.
  • Wash it. Dyed brown cotton releases colour into the water for several cycles. Undyed colored cotton releases only a faint fibre dust in the first wash.

The claims you can defend

“Naturally colored”, “undyed”, “no dye” — all fine if true. “Organic” is a different claim about farming and needs certification. “Chemical-free” is not defensible for any textile. In the US, the FTC requires fibre content and country of origin on the label regardless of the story.
