How to wash naturally colored cotton (and why cold water matters)

Cold wash, no bleach, shade dry. Three rules, plus the reason green fades faster than brown.

Naturally colored cotton is not fragile, but it does not behave like dyed cotton. The pigment sits inside the fibre rather than bonded to its surface, so heat and UV affect it differently. Three rules cover almost everything.

Rule 1: cold or 30 °C, never hot

Hot water does two things: it swells the fibre and it accelerates pigment oxidation. Brown tolerates this reasonably well and often looks better for it. Green does not — repeated 60 °C washing will walk a sage green toward grey within a season.

Cold washing also protects the elastane in waistbands, which is what actually fails first in most underwear.

Rule 2: no bleach, no optical brightener

Chlorine bleach attacks the pigment directly and will leave pale patches that cannot be restored. Oxygen bleach is gentler but still unnecessary. If a stain needs treating, use a mild oxygen soak for 30 minutes at 30 °C and rinse thoroughly.

Also skip detergents marketed as “whitening” — they contain optical brighteners designed to deposit on fibre, which is the opposite of what an undyed garment wants.

Rule 3: dry in shade

UV is the second-largest cause of shade drift, after heat. Line drying indoors or in shade keeps both brown and green closer to their original tone. Tumble drying on low is acceptable; on high it is not, for the same reason as hot washing.

What to expect in the first wash

A faint brown or green tint in the water is normal — it is fibre dust, not dye, and it stops after two cycles. If the water runs strongly coloured for five washes, you are probably looking at dyed cotton, not colored cotton.

Softener, shrinkage and pilling

  • Fabric softener coats the fibre and reduces breathability. Skip it; the fabric softens on its own after a few washes.
  • Shrinkage — our knits are pre-shrunk and pre-washed to ≤5% residual. Wash cold and you will barely notice it.
  • Pilling — colored cotton pills a little more than long-staple white cotton in the first month, then settles. A fabric shaver handles the first pass.

Ironing and storage

Warm iron, inside out, no steam on the pigment side. Store dry and folded — hanging knits stretches the shoulder line, and damp storage is how mildew gets into cotton.
