Sourcing colored cotton underwear: a buyer's checklist

Nine questions that separate a real colored cotton factory from a trader with a nice catalogue.

2026-09-10 · Hunan Qinai Garments Co., Ltd.

Colored cotton is a small category with a lot of noise around it. Most suppliers offering “organic colored cotton underwear” are trading a stock item they have never seen knitted. These are the questions that sort them out.

1. Where does the yarn come from?

A real manufacturer can name the spinning mill and the shade. Vague answers (“our partner factory”) usually mean a trader buying finished goods from a wholesale market.

2. Is the fibre really undyed?

Ask for the yarn lot and the mill invoice. Ask what shade the water runs in the first wash. Ask whether they can supply a swatch of the raw yarn, not just the finished fabric.

3. What is the blend, and why?

Pure 100% colored cotton knits pill and lose shape. A supplier who claims 100% and guarantees no pilling is either misinformed or hoping you will not test. 60/40 with white cotton, or 65/35 with lyocell, is normal and honest.

4. What is the gusset made of?

If it is not two-ply cotton, the product does not deliver the claim your customer is paying for.

5. Realistic MOQ and lead time

For a factory with in-house cutting, 300 pcs per style per colour is a sensible minimum; 500 for babywear. Samples in 7–10 days, bulk in 25 days. Anyone quoting 10 days for bulk on a first order is either holding stock or planning to subcontract.

6. Where the cost actually hides

Cost lineTypical shareWatch for
Fabric35–45%Blend ratio quietly dropped to 40/60
Labour20–30%Piece-rate cutting corners on seam allowance
Trims & labels8–15%Cheap elastane that fails in 20 washes
Packaging5–8%Polybag grade, carton strength
Margin10–15%Trader markup disguised as factory price

7. Certificates, per order

OCS or GOTS chain of custody and OEKO-TEX reports are issued per lot. A PDF dated three years ago proves nothing about your shipment.

8. Who actually sews it?

Ask for a video of the line running your style, or a live video call. We do both — it is the fastest way to end the conversation about whether we are a factory.

9. What happens when something goes wrong?

The answer tells you more than the price list. Look for: an inspection report before packing, a photo of the first packed carton, a stated remedy for short shipment, and a named person who replies.
