The best underwear for sensitive skin is boring on purpose

Most irritation under underwear comes from four specific things. Fix those and the fabric choice becomes obvious.

2026-10-02 · Hunan Qinai Garments Co., Ltd.

If your skin reacts under underwear, the culprit is rarely “cotton vs something else”. It is usually one of four specific things: residual dye and finishing chemistry, a synthetic gusset, a narrow elastic band, or a seam that sits exactly where you sit.

1. Dye residue and finishing chemistry

Reactive dyes bond to cellulose, but not all of the dye reacts — the unfixed fraction has to be washed out, and how thoroughly that happens varies enormously between factories. Add formaldehyde-based fixing agents and optical brighteners and you have a plausible irritant sitting against skin for sixteen hours a day.

Undyed naturally colored cotton removes that variable entirely. It is the single most effective change you can make, and it is why our underwear line is built on it.

2. The gusset

A cotton body with a polyester gusset is a cotton garment in name only. The gusset is the part that matters: it should be two-ply cotton, cover-stitched, with no membrane. If a product page does not state the gusset composition, assume it is synthetic.

3. Elastic and seams

Narrow exposed elastic concentrates pressure and traps moisture. A self-fabric covered waistband with 5% elastane spreads the load. Flatlock seams — the overlock that lies flat rather than bunching — remove the ridges that rub at the leg opening.

4. Fit, which nobody wants to hear

A perfectly made brief in the wrong size will irritate more than a mediocre one that fits. Measure your waist and hips rather than buying your usual letter size, especially across brands.

Washing matters as much as buying

  • Wash at 30 °C or cold, inside out, with a fragrance-free liquid detergent.
  • Skip fabric softener — it coats the fibre and reduces breathability.
  • No chlorine bleach. Ever.
  • Double-rinse if your machine has it, to clear detergent residue.
  • Replace underwear when the waistband stops recovering, not when it looks worn.

What we make, and what we do not claim

Our briefs and boxer briefs use undyed brown or green cotton, a two-ply cotton gusset and flatlock seams. We do not claim they treat eczema or any condition — textiles are not medicine. We do claim they remove dye chemistry from the equation, which for a lot of people is the difference between tolerable and not.

Brands sourcing for this customer need documentation, not adjectives: our OEM page lists what ships with each order.
